History of Ancona University

The presence of a university in Ancona has a relatively recent history. In the Middle Ages, Ancona had a School of Law, and in 1562, Pope Pius V granted authorization to establish a “Studium Generale” offering instruction in Law, Theology, and Canon Law. However, the university experienced a decline in the 17th century, leading to its closure in 1739. It wasn’t until the end of World War I that the desire to re-establish a university in Ancona emerged. Various proposals were made in the 1920s, but none came to fruition. Finally, in 1969, the Free University of Ancona was established, which later became the State University of Ancona in 1971.

Over the years, the university expanded and added faculties in engineering, medicine and surgery, economics and commerce, agriculture, mathematics, physics, and natural sciences. By 2009, the university had five faculties, offering a wide range of undergraduate and graduate degree programs, vocational study courses, and PhD programs. The university grew in terms of student enrollment and faculty, with approximately 17,000 students and a teaching faculty of 550 professors, along with technical and administrative staff. The university’s teaching and research activities were initially scattered across different locations but were eventually consolidated into three main campuses: Monte Dago, Torrette, and Caserma Villarey.

In addition to these campuses, the university also had a sports complex and planned for the development of a botanical garden and a guest residence for visiting students and scholars. On January 18, 2003, the University of Ancona changed its name to “Università Politecnica delle Marche.
